The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana (PM-KISAN) is a scheme which is fully funded by the Indian government. It became effective from December 1, 2018. Under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana, the Central government will provide an income of Rs.6,000 to all farmers, in three equal instalments of Rs.2,000 after every four months.
Working of Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana
Under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana, the Central government has allotted a fund of Rs.190 billion. Grants of Rs.6,000 per farmer will be given from this fund every year.
To qualify for the annual grant, which is divided in “kist” or installments, you need to register as a beneficiary. I will explain the entire process later in this article
Furthermore, the scheme is divided into ‘kist’ or installments. This means, that if you’ve successfully registered for the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana, you could get the three checks over a period of four months.
These installments are called “kist”. So, if you’re getting the check for the first time, you might still be getting the 9th or the 10th “kist” of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana.
Beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme
The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana aims at all farmers and their families in India. However, it is the sole responsibility of the state governments and Union Territory administrations to identify eligible farmers for the scheme.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana, the definition of a family means the farmer husband, wife and two minor children.
At the same time, farmers covered under the Exclusion Criteria such as high-income farmers and their families or those who do not fulfill certain requirements related to farming and agriculture, are not eligible to be covered under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana.
Enrolling for the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana
For enrollment, the farmer has to approach the local “patwari” or revenue officer or Nodal Officer for the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana nominated by the State Government of the state where the farmer and their family hold the domicile certificate.
Additionally, the Central government has also authorized Common Service Centers (CSCs) to register farmers for the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana, upon payment of nominal processing fees.
At the same time, farmers can also register themselves through the Farmers Corner in the portal. They also edit their names in PM-Kisan database as per their Aadhaar database through the Farmers Corner on the portal.

Documents Required for Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana
All farmers that wish to apply for the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana have to submit the following documents.
- Aadhar card
- Copies of bank passbook
- The passbook should clearly indicate the name of the farmer, name of the bank, ISFC code, address of the bank branch and show pages with the last income.
- In some cases, you might also require a letter from the Nodal Officer or Patwari or other officials appointed to process applications for the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana.
Payment of “Kist” Under Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana
Eligible farmers that’ve successfully enrolled for the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana will get checks at their residential address indicated on the Aadhar card. These checks will be worth Rs.2,000 each.
You will receive three such checks, each of Rs.2,000 during a calendar year, from January to December. Each of these checks are called as “kist” meaning installment in the Hindi language.
Here, it’s important to remember that the spellings for your full name have to be submitted correctly at the time of application. Because, banks will not honor a check that has any variations in the name, albeit slight, under Indian banking laws.
Normally, announcements that the Indian government will be remitting the “kist” and the dates when you could expect the check will be announced in all major newspapers by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the official mouthpiece of the Central government and respective state governments.

There’re several fraudsters that pose as agents and will offer to enroll you for the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana, if you pay them a fee.
The Indian government has not appointed any agents to enroll farmers. Instead, they have given the authority to local Patwaris and Nodal Officers to register you as a beneficiary.
